Josie alerted me to your article, so yet once again, I am here (happily) breaking my Substack absence to praise your smart, thoughtful, well-researched, and wonderfully illustrated essay. I agree 3000% with your predictions. Protecting female sports has always been the tip of the spear here, for so many reasons. I recall, as one, Nancy Hogshead noting a stat indicating the large number of families affected by this. (Was it something like 38% of people in the state she discussed?) Female sports is concrete and understandable, too.
On the "anecdata" front, I've had two recent conversations with working class men I know, one a solid Democrat, the other I don't know, but not a Trumper. When I asked their thoughts on sports, the one I know to be a Democrat said "Losing position! The Democrats need to drop this!" Both also pointed to the 2024 Olympic boxing debacle, enraged to see a male punching a female. They were not confused, and they each went on at some length about what a travesty this is.
Your piece chimes nicely, too, with information contained in the NYT's June 30 piece from Thomas Edsall, "A Working-Class Party Without Many Workers," from which I drew the following in a note I recently sent to a friend:
As we have seen from other polling, the needle is definitely moving in the correct direction with regard to two key gender identity issues: sports and medicalization of minors—and in the case of those without college degrees, they’re already there, by a huge margin.
We just have to keep plugging away at the grassroots roots level, particularly by means of in-person conversations. I see a similarity to gay marriage here: it took many, many years of groundwork—and strategic use of lawsuits—but the population at large finally moved strongly toward support.
Congratulations to you, the WSPWG, and all the others who have stood up and joined in this fight. We are correct, and we will win!
Oh, for sure. When this malevolent farce is exposed for the cult it is, millions of "trans allies" will try to go crawling quietly back into the woodwork, hoping the rest of us will forget.
But we won't. We won't forget.
And I, for one, will be shoving it into their faces until I croak.
(Those who apologize and admit the error of their ways I will gladly accept with grace. Those who don't -- well, let's just say I wish I believed in Hell so I could hope they would rot there.)
But that becomes *possible* if & when the professionals who should have known better are forced to take some responsibility — for propagating the gross “dead son or live daughter” lies, for their ethical incompetence, and for their direct involvement in harming children.
